“Those who carry out two-finger test for rape survivors are also guilty.”––Supreme Court

NEW DELHI: If a two-finger test is carried out in a rape case, those who carry out such a test will also be guilty from now on. The Supreme Court (SC) has criticised the Central Government for not stopping such tests even after the ban on the test.

The SC has issued instructions that strict guidelines should be enforced. The SC said the two-finger test is humiliating for women.

In the two-finger test, the virginity of the rape victim is tested by inserting one or two fingers in the genital area of the victim. The purpose of the test is to find out whether the woman had sexual intercourse or not. If both fingers move easily in the genital area, the victim is considered to be sexually active. If this does not happen and there is difficulty in the movement of the fingers, then the hymen in her genital area is considered to be intact. This is considered proof that the woman is a virgin.
