PUNE: It has come to light now that a major albeit freak accident has taken place on the Satara-Pune highway when a tunnel angle collapsed on top of a truck. 

As per the information trickling in from the highway police, apparently, the calamitous incident occurred when an angle of light within the tunnel leading to Pune from Khambatki Ghat broke off and collided with a passing truck. The aftermath of that particularly freak accident resulted in considerable damage to the truck while grievously injuring the driver. The incident has propelled authorities to swing into action. 

As a precautionary measure, traffic heading towards Pune has been rerouted through Khambataki Ghat since the early hours of the morning. The traffic has been diverted through the old ghat road.

According to police report, the incident took place early morning just near the Khambatki tunnel. The angle collapsed on the truck driving on the route from Satara to Pune. The critically driver has been rushed to a local hospital. The Highway Police has removed the truck from the tunnel and made way for vehicles to ply the route, there is a serpentine line of vehicles on the road as the holiday weekend has ended and people are returning to Mumbai and Pune.

This horrific incident has once again highlighted the burgeoning albeit recurring issue, as past instances have witnessed similar angles dislodging and landing on vehicles, including cars and trucks plying on the highway. These angles, installed over two decades ago, have never undergone comprehensive testing, rendering them vulnerable and unsafe.

In light of this bone-chilling episode, a need of the hour has risen to the fore wherein a thorough examination and assessment of the angles’ condition is inescapable. The potential risks posed by these weakened angles cannot be cast aside, and a failure to address this issue forthwith could once again potentially lead to even more potentially disastrous accidents.
